Ada County is where most Treasure Valley roofing demand sits, and it isn’t one market. A 1920s North End bungalow, a foothills property under the WUI overlay, and a 2004 Meridian subdivision house have almost nothing in common except the weather.

Eagle — larger lots, more custom homes, more complex rooflines. Tile and metal are more common here than in the rest of the county.
Kuna — rapid newer growth, mostly straightforward asphalt roofs approaching their first replacement.
Star — one of the fastest-growing towns in the valley, almost entirely newer stock.
Garden City — mixed residential and light commercial along the State Street and Chinden corridors, plus foothills-adjacent development to the north.

We don’t serve McCall, Twin Falls, Sun Valley or northern Idaho. If you’re up there we’ll say so and point you toward someone local — a roofer two hours away is no use to you when a tarp is needed tonight.
Permitting is different in every city
This catches people out. Ada County doesn’t run one permitting process — each incorporated city runs its own.
The City of Boise requires permit type 428 for residential roofing, siding and windows, caps roofs at a maximum of two layers, and requires ice and water shield extending 24 inches past the exterior heated wall line (36 inches at 8/12 pitch and steeper).
Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Star and Garden City each have their own requirements, fee schedules and inspection processes. Unincorporated Ada County is different again.
Under Idaho Code 54-5205, the building department has to ask for a contractor registration number before issuing a permit — and a permit issued to an exempt person must say so on its face.

01 Which cities are in Ada County?

02 Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Ada County?
Almost certainly, but the process depends on which city you’re in. Boise uses permit type 428. Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Star and Garden City each run their own.
03 Are Ada County roofers licensed?
Idaho doesn’t issue a roofing licence — there’s no roofing trade exam in this state. What’s required is registration with the Idaho Contractors Board for work over $2,000, plus general liability insurance of at least $300,000 per occurrence and workers’ comp. Ours is [RCE-#####]. 04 How much does a roof cost in Ada County?
Most replacements land between $10,000 and $15,000. Larger or steeper rooflines run $15,000–$25,000. Repairs typically $1,000–$5,000.
05 Do you charge more outside Boise?
No. Travel within Ada County is priced the same. Access difficulty — foothills hillsides, tight North End alleys — affects price more than distance does.
